Houghton Fall/Winter 2013 Inspiration

The Fall/Winter 2013 Collection will hit the runway later today and I couldn’t be more excited to share what I’ve been working on.

This season I was inspired by the eccentric yet very chic elder women of the Upper East Side. You know the type of women I mean: in their nineties they’re still out gallivanting around the streets of Manhattan in a style that’s all their own. Their smart and spirited New York way of dressing caught my eye. They’re so chic and confident in their style. I love their completely unique sense of fashion and unexpected combinations like a long fur coat with layers of silk and lace ever so haphazardly peeking out. These ladies always make sure to layer on oversized accessories that could have been bought 50 years ago or just yesterday—everything from bauble necklaces to rich, leather gloves to plastic costume jewelry. These women are effortlessly stylish the way my inspiration, Katharine Hepburn, always was.

For this collection I imagined ladies out for a cocktail at the Carlyle Hotel in the 1980’s and thought about how my friends and I would recreate their style for today. I was drawn to jewel toned leathers and velvets with accents of fuchsia, cobalt blue, and emerald. To showcase the eclectic and glamorous mix of styles and fabrics of the Upper East Side ladies I added details of silver fox and light as air accents of black ostrich feathers. I went hunting for my love of novelty textiles in Paris, so keep your eyes open for laminated lace, unique burnout velvets and waxed twill.

Houghton Bride- The Engagement Party

Houghton Bride officially launched on October 14th at The Engagement Party. The Houghton Bride is sexy, stylish, avant garde and fun. The collection is made up of french guipure lace, an array of silks and hand beaded styles constructed into simple and clean silhouettes. With the help of L’Oreal Professional lead stylist, Laura Polko,I created an undone take on the french braid. Laura got creative and wound the braids around the modes heads then pulled out stands. no rubber bands or pins were used! For the Make up, Natalia Ramirez of Enter Pronoun helped me create a look that was a “blank canvas”. we used a nude matt lip and also brushed concealer through the eyebrow, Natalia used some silver/gold shimmer to highlight the cheek bone and around the brow.
